A peripheral venous catheter is a class II medical device, composed of a thin, Teflon-coated, flexible tube that has a trocar with a beveled tip inside. This trocar allows the Teflon of the peripheral venous line to be inserted into the endolumen of the patient's vein.

Once the catheter tube is inside the vein, it is used to administer intravenous fluids, medications, antibiotics, pain relievers, blood transfusions and/or chemotherapies.
